Press Release 2012
On the morning of May 26, while many people were sleeping or preparing to celebrate the 2012 Memorial Day weekend, more than 360 athletes arrived at Sea Isle City's Excursion Park for the 5th Annual Tri-For-Our-Veterans Triathlon and Duathlon. The race, which raises funds and awareness for the Injured Marines Semper Fi Fund and VFW Post 1963, takes place in the ocean, along Landis and Pleasure Avenues and on the Promenade.
This year, 310 athletes competed in the sprint triathlon, which included a quarter-mile ocean swim, an 8.3-mile bicycle course and a 3.1-mile run. Fifty-five competitors raced in the sprint duathlon, which required a 2-mile run, an 8.3-mile bicycle course and an additional 3.1-mile run. Athletes came from all across the region – and from as far away as Texas and Illinois – to compete in the race, which was held in perfect weather conditions. Countless spectators and a small army of volunteers cheered for the competitors all along the race course.
According to Tri-For-Our-Veterans organizer Bridgette Summa, this year’s race raised approximately $43,000 – just over the amount raised in 2011. "This year’s competition went very well," she said. "We had beautiful weather and a lot of great volunteers who made sure that everything went very smoothly."
"I was honored when Team Semper Fi presented me with a plaque that featured photos of their team members during last year’s race," added Summa. "We are the only triathlon in the country that benefits the Semper Fi Fund, so it means a lot to our veterans and their families."

“Tri for Our Veterans” is a fundraiser to benefit The Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund, which provides financial assistance and quality of life solutions to injured marines and sailors, their families, and other service members injured while in direct support of marine units.
This year’s event is being dedicated to Matt McCulley, the founder of “Tri for Our Vets.” On Jan. 12, Matt suddenly passed away.
McCulley was an avid triathlete and coach. He had a vision to develop a triathlon in his favorite vacation town, Sea Isle City, which would benefit two very special organizations, the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund and Sea Isle City's VFW Post 1963.
